Honor Health/SUSD/SUSD Foundation/Farley Foundation Biosciences Teacher Initiative

During fall break last week, 10 Scottsdale District teachers took part in an innovative new program designed to support excellence in bioscience education in our classrooms.  The program’s goal is to increase teacher and student motivation for bioscience education, to enhance instructional practice with real-world medical research applications and to increase teacher and student awareness of bioscience education, possible career paths and resources to support their future development.

Arcadia Japanese Contest Students

Saif McPherson earned a 3rd place award and Itzae Blanco-Diaz earned a first place award at the 27th Annual Arizona Japanese Speech Contest, an annual event that includes both high school and college students from Arizona.  Students wrote, memorized and presented speeches in Japanese before an audience of judges.  SUSD will offer Japanese language at all five high schools beginning fall 2016.



Top 50 Phoenix Career & Technical Education Programs
In 2016, Arcadia High School EVIT students ranked #2 in the Phoenix Business Journal's top 50 career and technical education programs in the metro Phoenix area, based on 2014 SAT test scores.


FIRST Robotics Competition Successes
Over the weekend of April 8th, students from Coronado, Arcadia, Chaparral and Saguaro robotics competed in the Arizona West Regional competition at Grand Canyon High School. 

The Arcadia High School robotics team, team #3187, competed at the Arizona West Regional and received the Gracious Professionalism Award sponsored by Johnson & Johnson.  Congratulations to these students!

Congratulations to the Arcadia High School Winter Guard! They earned the title of 2016 Novice Class Champion at the Winter Guard Arizona Championships Friday, April 1.

Scottsdale Sister Cities
The Scottsdale Sister Cities organization works to develop international friendships and understanding with the citizens of other nations. This mission is accomplished by people-to-people interactions, which are managed by the Scottsdale Sister Cities Association (SSCA). This past May, 10 SUSD students participated in the Sister Cities trip to China acting as student ambassadors for their schools, the City of Scottsdale, and the USA. Through this process, our students and students in China both gained personal knowledge of each other’s languages, geography, civics, and cultures.

Beating the Odds 2015: Top High Schools for Low-Income Students
Newsweek’s “Beating the Odds” list (500 high schools) seeks to identify schools that do an excellent job of preparing their students for college while also overcoming the obstacles posed by students at an economic disadvantage.



Arcadia High School Art Students Place in Local Contest
Congratulations to Mackenzie Miller and Tia Biakaddy, two Arcadia High School advertising art students, who were recognized in the Metro Valley Bus and Light Rail Wrap Competition. Mackenzie took second place and Tia won third place. They were chosen out of more than 200 entries. Congratulations to Tia and Mackenzie!



Arcadia’s Magna Carta Video
A group of student filmmakers from Arcadia High School were announced as winners of the national American Bar Association’s Magna Carta Video Competition. The students traveled free of charge to Washington, D.C. in April where had a personal meeting with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who viewed the film with them. The students were also recognized at the American Bar Association Day Justice Awards Reception and Dinner. Congratulations to the team!


Arcadia Student Noah Zweiback Wins Pin Design Contest
Noah Zweiback was recently named the gold medal winner in the Arizona State Pin Design Contest. His design will be created and used as the official pin and logo of Arizona SkillsUSA. Noah and his design will compete in the national competition.


Senior Tia Biakaddy Graduating from Arcadia and Scottsdale Community College
Congratulations to Tia Biakaddy for another accomplishment. Tia will be graduating from Scottsdale Community College just before she graduated from Arcadia High School. 


Arcadia High School Drumline
Congratulations to the Arcadia High School drumline! They were awarded the silver medal for second place at the Winter Guard Arizona state competition.


Richard Maxwell, Music Educator Award
Arcadia High School Contemporary Music and Sounds (CMAS) teacher Richard Maxwell was named one of 10 finalists for the Music Educator Award, presented by The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. Richard will receive a $1,000 honorarium and Arcadia gave a matching grant as part of the award. Thank you for your dedication to SUSD and its students!


Arcadia Girls’ Tennis State Champions
The Arcadia High School girls’ tennis team took home the Division II State Championship title in early May with a win over last year’s champion, Catalina Foothills. With a 5-1 win, Arcadia won the championship, its first since 2008. Congratulations to the team and head coach Josh Olshan!


Arcadia Senior Matt Anderson Earns Top Athletic Award
Matt Anderson, a recently graduated senior from Arcadia High School, was named the winner of the Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A/5A Scholar Athlete of the Year for his academic and athletic achievements. Matt has been a member of Arcadia’s varsity swim and dive team for four years. He was the captain of the swim team this year and holds numerous school swimming records. Matt also holds a 4.767 GPA and graduated with honors at the top of Arcadia’s class. He’s participated in and volunteered for many clubs and groups inside and outside of Arcadia. Congratulations Matt!

scc.png SCC T-shirt Design Competition
Mareli Aguiniga, a student at Arcadia High School, won the Scottsdale Community College Math & Science T-shirt Design competition as well as a $250 award. Mareli is an Advertising Art student in Dianna Cure's class.
