SUSD Celebrates More Flinn Scholars than Any District in Arizona
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (May 9, 2017) Scottsdale Unified School District is extremely proud to announce that three of its distinguished students have been awarded the 2017 Flinn Scholarship. Only 20 seniors across the state are recipients of this coveted award this year, and three of them are our own:
- Cameron Whyte, Saguaro High School
- Camryn Lizik, Arcadia High School (middle)
- Keaton McDonald, Arcadia High School (left)
Cameron Whyte got a standing ovation at last month’s Governing Board meeting for this achievement. Camryn Lizik and Keaton McDonald will be recognized at the Tuesday, May 9, board meeting, and we are expecting more thunderous applause.
The Flinn Scholarship is a true “full ride.” The college scholarship covers the cost of tuition, room and board, two study-abroad experiences and an off-campus internship. It is explicitly for students who will attend one of Arizona’s three public universities.
“The Foundation is once again inspired by the dynamic student leaders who make up the new class of Flinn Scholars. These talented and successful students, a diverse group from rural and urban areas of Arizona, are ready for an extraordinary education and college experience at our state’s universities,” said Jack B. Jewett, Flinn Foundation President and CEO.
Whyte announced last month he will attend Arizona State University in the fall. Lizik and McDonald plan to join him.
Arcadia Principal Nathan Slater says of his standout seniors, “Keaton is a tremendous person with amazing character and I am always thrilled to be in his presence. Camryn is positive in everything she does. Her efforts and personality make me proud to be the principal of the school she attends.”
No other school district in Arizona had three students receive the 2017 Flinn award. It is a credit not only to these tremendous students, but to their outstanding teachers through the years.
McDonald and Lizik will be honored at the beginning of the Governing Board meeting on Tuesday, May 9, at 5 pm at Coronado High School. For more information about our SUSD Flinn Scholars or to coordinate interviews, contact Erin Helm at 480-389-9033.
